Providence Canyon State Park Hike/Campout

November 15-16, 2008

Providence Canyon State Park is located seven miles west of Lumpkin, Georgia on 1,003 acres of land. Visitors are amazed at the breathtaking colors of Georgia's ‘Little Grand Canyon.’ The rare Plumleaf Azalea and other wildflowers, as well as the pink, orange, red and purple hues of the soft canyon soil, make a beautiful natural painting at this unique park.”

We will have two groups on this trip: one that will hike into the backcountry for an overnight backpacking experience, and one that will complete a day hike, then return to base campsite to work on Scout Skills and outdoor fun. This is a perfect opportunity for a Scout to make his first backpacking trip. Also, this would be a great outing to work on several merit badges including Backpacking, Camping, Nature, and Soil & Water Conservation. The seven mile backcountry trail is rugged and difficult – therefore, you must be a 1st Class and weigh at least 100# to go on the backpacking part of this campout. (Anyone may go on the camping part.) IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN BACKPACKING BEFORE, you MUST let Mr. White know that you wish to backpack by WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15 so that you have time to properly prepare. NOTE: there is a 10-person maximum for hiking groups to the backcountry – so sign up soon!

For more information on the state park, go to http://www.gastateparks.org/info/providence/ , There you will find maps, directions and pictures of this great location.

Patrols should plan on a cooked Saturday dinner and breakfast at the camp. Hikers will cook their meals as a group. Bring money for lunch for both to and from camp (or pack a sack lunch for Saturday).

Service Hours Opportunities

As part of a Scout's rank advancement, Scouts need to complete a certain number of service hours. From time to time, we become aware of ways that Scouts may get these hours. Upcoming opportunities are:

October 18, 2008 - Oak Grove Men's BBQ Service Project

Remember that service is an integral part of Scouting.
